Cropping Photos (with picresize.com)

You will occasionally need to crop or resize your photos for web use.  There are many ways this can be done, even if you don't have sophisticated graphics software on your computer.  We recommend this free online tool to get the job done quickly and without fuss.

  1. Open your browser and go to http://www.picresize.com.

  2. Click "Browse" and locate the image file on your computer. Select it and click "Open." (If you don't see the image you're looking for in its containing folder, the file might be in a format not accepted by the online tool. If this is the case, don't worry; there are several sites, such as zamzar.com that will allow you to convert the image into the JPG format.)

  3. To make a selection, click within the picture to set the upper-left corner of the desired photo area. Move your mouse to create a box and click again to set the lower-right corner of the frame.

If you need to re-do the selection, you can remove the frame by clicking anywhere within the picture and starting over.

Once your selection is final, click the "Crop Selection" button.

You can perform additional crops to fine-tune your image, if necessary. You can also undo any crops by clicking "Original."

  4. You can reduce the size of your image by 25%, 50%, or 75% by selecting the appropriate toggle button. You can also specify your own custom size by percentage (100% if you don't want to resize, for example) or pixels. If you choose to set the size by pixel size, choose a number of pixels for either the width or the height, but not both, so as to avoid creating blank spaces on the sides of the image.

Keep in mind that the image displayed on the screen by the tool does not reflect the actual size of the image.

  5. Click "Resize Pic!"

  6. You can now choose "Save to Disk" to save the cropped image to your hard drive. Choose a folder to store your image in and click "Save."
